where an inmate pleaded guilty today and he admitted to shooting a deputy and stabbing another. despite the injuries, master deputy charles embree and deputy thomas like were able to subdue phillips. both survived and phillips faces up to 30 more years in prison. and court hearings for the suspected serial stabber are delayed in michigan. a defense lawyer has waved his right to have a speedy hearing and is faying a murder charge. five men were killed and 9 more seriously injured in the series of stabbings and is expected in acts in virginia and ohio. flames destroyed three hopes and damaged four more. a day later, investigators don't know what sparked the fire in monasses. thify marshal believes that the flames began on the back deck of the home in tillett loop and spread quickly and is not sure why. >> reporter: investigators say

that it could take some tom before they have a grass opthis blaze. the fire marshal is reviewing audio and video from witnesses at the scene and investigators have a scientific methodology that they are following. firefighters say when they first arrived on the scene, one of the homes was engulfed in flames and the fire was quickly spreading to the properties on either side and the wind was helping it along. everyone got out alive and 24 hours, most fish, perished. the blaze began on the back deck of the homes and that is still undetermined and investigators ask for extra help from an arson dog, traind too sniff for accelerant and according to the fire chief, it's not out of the ordinary to find a structure engulfed in flames minutes after getting the call. >> it's not unusual as many will believe. it's not a matter of time it takes to arrive on the scene but the preburn, the amount of

a coral gables, florida, bank standoff ends with a search for the robbers continues. the fbi agents say three bank robbers kidnapped the bank employee this morning and strapped a possible explosive to his chest and used him to steal money from a bank branch of a bank of america. he worked at the university of miami. the teller got away unharmed and suspects escaped. and the slaying of the university of virginia lacrosse player by her boyfriend prompted an event today on safety and campus prevention. the 22-year-old was found dead in her offcampus apartment. her ex-boyfriend who played lacrosse also is charged with the murder. today's event called day of dialogue toured a caring community and featured a series

of discussions, a resource fair and public art project. the texas board of education adopted a resolution to curb the amount of influence that islam has in school textbooks. the resolution urges textbook publishers to limit what they print about islam in world history books. the committee members say they feel the need to fend off what they call a pro-islamic, anti- christian bias in the school system. the resolution is based and biased against islam and plan to fight it. a knockdown, drag-out fight between two high school girls posted on youtube and they're not facing charges yet. one of their mothers is. coming up in the news edge, find out why. and wine making is a growing year in maryland. there is something new they have to watch out for. it's called the stink bug. betty's becoming the stink bug reporter, isn't she? they are everywhere. we need a reporter assigned to it. and what about the heat? we need a break from it and

rain. both in the forecast first, rich. luxury car maker bentley is recalling 820 cars worldwide. most of them here in the u.s. over fears the winged b hood ornaments could injury someone in the crash. the company said the spring mechanism under the hood ornament may not work properly and if it doesn't retract is, it could increase the risk of injuries to pedestrian.

they're about records and today is the 65th day we're at or above 90 in 2010 and 67 is the record set and it's doable, although not in the next stretch of days. this is also been the warmest summer on record and second warmest spring on record and, of course, let's not forget about last winter and that is -- 2010 featured a lot of extremes for us and we're about to get relief in the temperature department and rain is on the way, too. 94 degrees right now. as we lose the sun, we're going to see them getting more reasonable and i wanted to show you the cooler air and enteral falls, 48 and cooler air is heading in our direction and that is going to be warm tomorrow and not as hot and

lots of sunshine and that west wind. tomorrow night and sunday, we get some autumn-like air in here and at 8 in the morning, 74 and fun for the practice for the kids and noon, 83 and by 5:00, 87 degrees and now, i want to talk about the rain that is going to be coming. a couple of things have to happen. first of all, mostly clear out there and he's our frontal system and no how it's running out of shower and thunderstorm activity. a slight chance that we might see a shower with that tomorrow and not a good chance, though and you're saturday is mostly dry and that is showing one or two spotty showers around and this is coming on through and mostly dry. through the weekend, send at 6:00, we're still dry and seeing the rain to the south and here it is, beginning around the drive time on monday and this is going to be a really helpful soaker for us and that is a monday-tuesday

rain and we're excited about that and that is provided by the cutoff area of low pressure and we knew it might impact our forecast for sunday and that looks like right now, the rain will primarily find off until late sunday and into monday and tuesday and that will be a wet weekend for the south and speaking of the south, temperaturewise, first of all, we'll focus on the weekend, 87 tomorrow; 75 for sunday and how nice is that going to be. i wanted to mention quickly our tropical storm matthew made landfall today and that is in northeasternic inia wagra and is expected to -- nicaragua and is expected to bring torrential rain to north america and that will be inland a few days and there were some indications it might effect the southeastern united states and that is erratic. the long-term forecast unsure and hope it will dissipate. we're sad to see that it's going to create a lot of problems for central america the next few days and need to watch the caribbean. it's hot and that looks like

something else could form there and possibly threaten the east coast and that is remaining to be seen. hasn't happened or formed yet. the model guidance, though, showing us some nice temperatures for next week and that is opposite what we're going through. sunday, 74 and showers in the forecast on monday and tuesday and we need them. this is going to be like liquid gold. everyone is so dry. it's becoming critical for us to get rain now. >> thank you, sue. >> sure. and a fight between two high school girls posted on youtube and that landed one of the mothers in jail. it was shot in palmetto, florida. one of the girl's mothers can be seen in the video egging her daughter on, encouraging her to punch harder and ordering her not to stop. the 39-year-old is charged with child abuse. the sheriff's deputies say some of the students involve could face disciplinary action. and caught on tape, a small plane crash.

watch it burst into flames in an air show in indonesia. the crash was seen by hundreds of school children at the show. the pilot, the only person on board the single-engine aircraft was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. the redskins hit the road. will the starting left tackle be on the field to protect mcnabb? lindsay murphy has the latest in your sports edge.
